postheadericon Proper Storage of your Wine

I really love wine and drink it quite often, so I always have it on hand and ready to go for that nice tasty glass after dinner…..or before dinner……..or both, I’m quite partial to sipping a glass while we watch a movie too. Ever had it with popcorn? I know, sounds crazy weird, but it’s really pretty good! And of course, cheese is awesome with a glass of wine too.

The only thing that I struggle with on wine is where to store it before I use it. Have you ever bought a nice bottle of wine and got it home and wondered what to do with it now? It’s happened at our house a few times! Stress no further, I just read an article in stylist.com that talks about that very thing, I learned a few more things from the article as well. For long term storage, the optimal temperature to store wine in is between 50 and 55 degrees Fahrenheit, and one should avoid sudden fluctuations in temperature. Typically, wine will store well for a year or two if stored in the range of 40 and 70 so long as temperature changes are gradual. And believe it or not, humidity makes a difference in the cork. The humidity should be somewhere between 50 and 80 percent so that the cork doesn’t dry out or crumble which could cause it to lose its seal. Who knew right?

Wine should also be stored on its side rather than upright and in a calm environment where it receives little vibration from the surroundings which disturbs the sediment……thus the infamous wine racks which prevent a lot of this. Also, it’s important that the wine isn’t stored in direct sunlight or ultraviolet light, which can make your wine age prematurely.

When storing your wine in the wine rack, the article suggests that you turn the bottle so that the label is up, that way you don’t have to turn the bottles when you’re looking through your stock……….I need to get that much stock……a girl can’t have too much variety in her wine, right? I mean, It’s like shoes, or cute sweaters…..one can never have too many.

There really isn’t a need for a wine refrigerator unless you’re going to keep some of it for a special occasion in a year or two, then you might want to invest in one. From what I’m reading, they usually cost somewhere between $400 and $600.

All in all, I had a pretty read about how and where to store my wine.

Happy storing of your awesome wines for the year!
